India 5: what is the richest religious institution in the world? (v1.0)
Most people would say the Vatican. Which was true.
The wealthiest temple in India was the Tirupati temple in south India. However, in 2011, a new one arose that was wealthier than both of them combined.
There is a temple in the old kingdom of Travancore (most of the state of Kerala in India) called Padmanabha swami temple in Thiruvananthapuram. The king of Travancore a long time ago made the idol of the temple the true head of state. He then took on the title of administrator and governed the kingdom and so did all his successors. The wealth of this temple grew for thousands of years, and all the wealth was in its vaults.
In 2011, the supreme court ruled that the temples wealth should be audited. 6 vaults were known to exist, but the auditor discovered two additional hidden inner vaults. In all these vaults were untold riches. An appraisal of the vaults already audited was put at 20 to 40 billion dollars. But you cannot really put a dollar value since a majority of the things were priceless.
There were 6 known vaults. And 2 new hidden inner vaults. of those, only 4 vaults have been inventoried so far. One additional vault’s audit is still in progress and has lacs of artifacts. The valuation will increase substantially after the audit of this vault is done. The three remaining vaults remain unopened and are believed to have the biggest haul of wealth. Some Estimates are that the total could exceed a trillion dollars not counting cultural and archeological value if all the vaults were opened. These unopened vaults (not sure if all of them) have no door handle or any means of opening but have the image of two huge, intertwined serpents on the door. It is said only a magic hymn will open it and no one knows it. (Please note that the deity of the temple is lord Vishnu reclining on Anantha the gigantic serpent).
The unopened vaults are not opened because of fear even in the supreme court of India which sanctioned the audit. Indian Literature has references on what terrible things will happen to India and the world if these innermost vaults are opened.
The guy who filed the original lawsuit and won in the supreme court verdict which granted his request to audit died promptly as the 4 currently inventoried vaults were opened.
Sounds like a movie plot from Indiana Jones or Lara Croft?
