why I write essays, and a guide to the blog (v1.0)
My essays serve multiple purposes for me.
- Keeps me busy and occupied in retirement. Keeps my mind active. It is a hobby.
- I learn a lot on subjects I find interesting. But I am no Physicist, Biologist, Chemist, Political Scientist, Economist, Philosopher, Theologist, Paleontologist, Geologist, Historian, Anthropologist, Finance Expert, Climatologist, Meteorologist, etc. I am a writer, nothing more. On factual topics, I learn things and write about them. They help me form a world view and get the best understanding of the truth.
- It is part of my legacy (primarily the personal and opinion essays) that goes to my heirs and that people who know me might be interested in. What I am willing to share about myself, my opinions and my experiences are in these blogs. Nothing more to add.
- I provide a free service to people I know who often may not be exposed to these kinds of factual subjects. Others can spend the time and effort to research and do the same thing. But I do it and save them the time and effort. The essay subjects though are picked solely by me and aligns with my interests.
The URL of my blogs site are in my LinkedIn and Instagram account profiles so the public who find it and, if they think it is interesting, can read it too. I don’t do anything else to increase readership except let people I know, know about it to read if interested. Not my focus at all. Nor is any commercialization. Feel free to share with your friends or use otherwise (with constraints of course on use of my personal essays)
Most of my personal or opinion essays are original content. But the essays on more generalized factual or specialized topics are written after taking a course, or reading articles or searching the web, and are NOT original content by me. My contribution is synthesis and presentation. I have tried to avoid cut and paste as far as possible, but the concepts and ideas belong to others. When there is a clear reference (like a course or article) I cite the professor or publication. When it is from many sources, that is hard.
I hope my efforts helps you.
I post links to new essays to a single email distribution list (4/20/2024: currently 38 active readers) of people who know me. If you want to opt out of it, let me know. If you know me and want to be added, let me know. The distribution list will be only in the BCC in an email.
To add comments to a blog, you need a google sign-in, and for that to work smoothly in most browsers, you need to enable third party cookies in that browser. This is not really a workable or effective discussion forum, but comments on blogs are welcome.
